According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, 2023 will be a very quiet year when it comes to Apple news. The Cupertino company finally intends to focus on its first mixed reality headset.

For Apple, 2023 will be the year of the mixed reality headset, and not much else », announces Mark Gurman in a post published on January 8, 2023. Here, the journalist, very well informed and often reliable, takes out his best crystal ball to share his predictions for the Cupertino company. According to its sources, the multinational would concentrate the majority of its efforts on this ambitious accessory, which will require a didactic approach to seduce the general public.

We recall that the mixed reality headset has been postponed many times – Mark Gurman, like others, was still waiting for its formalization last year. The schedule would be set as follows: announcement in the spring, a few weeks before WWDC 2023, and launch this fall. To successfully enter a whole new segment, Apple would sacrifice its other ranges this year – except the iPhone.

Apple in 2023: mixed reality headset, titanium iPhone 15 Pro and… that’s it

It may seem a bit misleading to say that there will be nothing new from Apple in 2023, when the company could revolutionize mixed reality headsets. But it’s a niche category that still has everything to prove in terms of uses (not just at Apple). In any case, the fact that it is ready to do less in the products it masters proves that the ambitions are immense.

An attractive iPhone 15 range (despite everything)

If the mixed reality headset will take a good chunk of the light in 2023, the iPhone 15 line would be very interesting. This is logical, since the iPhone 14 is often compared to an iPhone 13s, implying meager evolutions between the two generations. Apple must therefore make more of an impression with the iPhone 15.

The iPhone 15 line would offer the following features :

  • Four screen sizes, the same as for the iPhone 14 (6.1 and 6.7 inches for the normal, 6.1 and 6.7 inches for the Pro);
  • Dynamic Island for all four models;
  • A titanium frame for Pro models, like the Apple Watch Ultra;
  • Volume buttons replaced by surfaces with haptic feedback (like the latest Home buttons);
  • A new periscope zoom for the iPhone 15 Pro;
  • One USB-C port.

Nothing new for Macs, iPads and Apple Watches

On the Mac side, the only novelty could take the form of a MacBook Air with a 15-inch screen – but nothing is guaranteed. The other changes would be only minor within the range: introduction of the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips on the MacBook Pro, a Mac Pro with M2 Ultra (same design as the 2019 model, removal of the possibility of adding RAM) and no new iMac before the M3 processor.

For the iPads, it would probably be necessary to wait until 2024 to see the landing of tablets with a new design and OLED screens. In 2023, Apple would stick to a simple performance refresh. There would be nothing new for the Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple TV either. On the other hand, Apple would relaunch the very first HomePod: same look, S8 inch, redesigned touch surface and more affordable price.
