It was the Shiveluch volcano that erupted after midnight and ejected an ash cloud over an area of 108,000 square kilometers, according to data from the Kamchatka Branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The flows from the ship melted the snow and the villages closest to the crater were covered by piles of gray ash up to 8.5 centimeterswhich represents the greatest depth in 60 years.
“The ash reached 20 kilometers in height, the ash cloud moved to the west and there was a very strong fall of ash in the nearby villages”reported Danila Chebrov, director of the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey.
“The volcano has been preparing for this for at least a year…and the process continues, although it has calmed down a bit now”added the specialist.
An earthquake was also felt
In addition to the ash that covered the streets, the eruption of this volcano in Russia caused a magnitude 5.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Kamchatka. Later, local scientists explained that the telluric movement had been a replica of the one that occurred on April 3.
