At least six people died when a residential building collapsed in the French port city of Marseille. According to the fire department, two people were still missing today. The search for them continued in the dark. A gas explosion is believed to have caused the building to collapse.

The four-storey building with five apartments in the center of Marseille collapsed on Sunday night after a violent explosion. First, two dead were recovered from the rubble, followed by two more today, according to the authorities. In the afternoon, the emergency services then discovered two more bodies, according to the fire department.

Five people in neighboring houses were injured and almost 200 people had to leave their homes. Around a hundred rescue workers, supported by dogs, drones and heat probes, searched for people who had been buried. A fire smoldering in the rubble made the rescue operation difficult.
