The first concept images of sonic the hedgehog have revealed that the character was not originally intended to be a hedgehog. The first Sonic game came out in 1991 as the way to Sega to compete with Mario, the protagonist of Nintendo.

Since then, the blue blur has had quite a history in the gaming community, as well as penetrating the film industry with two Sonic the Hedgehog movies.

Sonic the Hedgehog has appeared in over 70 multi-platform games in its 30+ years of existence. With the longevity of the franchise, the character has even made its way to rival Nintendo platforms, proving just how iconic he is.

Although Sonic as a character has undergone some minor redesigns that have transcended from video games to film and television, he has always been known as a hedgehog to the core. However, a new confirmation from a member of Sonic’s team could shed light on the character’s origins.

According to a tweet from Sonic’s original character designer Naoto Ohshima, Sonic was originally going to be a human boy with spiky blue hair.

Sonic the Hedgehog was also originally an action game about two twin brothers who protect the dream world from the boss character of Nightmare World, known as Thirteen. Although the concept art attached to the tweet faithfully reproduces Ohshima’s description, no further information was provided on how they arrived at the current design.
