Various stories about health and life gather together the corridors, rooms and operating rooms of the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital, which has turned 82 years old. To celebrate, he gathered some of his patients considered medical feats, including the ex-siamese little sisters shadya and Shandell Vargas Vasquez.

They, who are currently 9 years old, were born conjoined twins and were successfully separated at that EsSalud hospital on April 24, 2013, when they were just two months old. The news of their separation went around the world. Today they lead a normal life, study, play, dance, run, etc.
“The Almenara hospital is our second home, because it is here that my daughters were born again and they remain in good health,” said Segundo Vargas, father of the girls.

Very high-risk surgery was successful
“The intervention was not only high risk but also was unprecedented in the history of Social Security”, said Dr. Jorge Amorós.
They conducted drills of the processes to further reduce risks. They took care of every detail: the anesthesia process, the incisions in the skin and abdomen, the closure of openings. AND with the help of technology they separated the livers and diaphragms.
The The intervention lasted 10 hours, with 30 specialists, two operating rooms and a Blood Bank. The little sisters Shadya and Shandell were in Pediatric Intensive Care, with mechanical ventilation and sedation.
They managed to recover and, to the joy not only of their family but also of the doctors, nurses and all of Peru, they have continued to grow sanitas. In a few days (February 26) girls they will be 10 years old.
