SPD parliamentary group against ban on wood and pellet heating systems in the heat transition

Group Vice Miersch: “Do not rule out any climate-friendly technologies from the outset” – after protests in forestry

Osnabruck. In the SPD parliamentary group there is resistance to the strict requirements and bans for wood and pellet heating systems provided for in the traffic light bill. Parliamentary deliberations are only just beginning, and “in the upcoming talks we are not ruling out any climate-friendly technologies from the outset,” said parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ).

Homeowners should also have different heating options in the future, “including biomass,” said the deputy parliamentary group leader, adding: “The main thing is at least 65 percent renewable.” Miersch emphasized that the switch to climate-friendly heating technologies must be “affordable for everyone”.

The traffic light cabinet passed a bill on Wednesday to switch to heating systems with renewable instead of fossil energy sources. It provides for a ban on pellet and wood heating systems for new buildings. In existing buildings, biomass heating systems should only be installed under strict conditions (including a dust filter requirement) and only in buildings that are difficult to renovate or are listed as historical monuments. One reason: The Federal Ministry for the Environment rates heating with wood “contrary to widespread opinion” as “not climate-neutral”.

Forestry is up in arms against the planned bans and requirements for wood heating. These would cause “enormous economic and ecological damage,” said the Association of Forest Owners AGDW. For example, there is no money for the climate-resilient conversion of the forests if the forestry sector can no longer sell its firewood.
