The Dornbirn Indians can look back on an eventful week of sports.

Dornbirn. Last weekend, the Dornbirn Indians and Vienna Metrostars parted ways in the Baseball Bundesliga with a split. The first duel of the day was balanced for a long time, but the Viennese kept the upper hand with a strong final sprint. In the second game, the guests were ahead again, but Chris Squires still turned the game in favor of the Vorarlbergers. The two teams started the season differently. While the Indians won three of their four complete games before the game against Vienna, the Vienna Metrostars, as record champions, only had one win in as many games.

The opening encounter quickly developed into a real pitcher duel between Omar Duenas and Ryan Rupp and was very balanced. It was 2-2 after six innings. In the following inning, Max Luger took over from the home side at Mound. He didn’t get the necessary support from the defense and the Viennese, who cleverly exploited some situations, recorded four runs to lead 6:2. Although the hosts got close again, the Metrostars didn’t get nervous, showed themselves to be experienced and finally celebrated a 9:5 win.

The pitchers also set the tone in the second duel of the day. Cole Jenkins and Shotaro Usui gave nothing away, both only allowed a few chances for the respective offensive. With the score at 2:1 for Dornbirn, the Metrostars took the lead by two runs in the sixth inning. Squires then hit a two-run home run and thus voted himself the “winning pitcher” because Dornbirn defended the narrow 4:3 lead to the end.

Narrow defeat for the Little Indians

Things were less successful for the Indians offspring at the weekend. After an increase in performance compared to the first two games, the Little Indians were beaten by the Hard Bulls U13 by almost 8:9. The young Indians were in the lead for a long time, but in the end they watched how the Harder made one run after the other and in the end were able to score the winning run.

Indians ladies are subject to Metrostars

The Indians women also remained without a win in their game against the Viennese women. Game one against the Metrostars was already decided after five innings in favor of the guests from Vienna (12:2). Especially with five runs in the fourth inning, the third of the past season laid the foundation for the opening win. The Indians could only score in the first and fifth innings. In the end, the hosts had to admit defeat with another 5:9 defeat. The bright spot that day was the first assignment by Katharina Luger and Annika Pichler in the 1st Softball Bundesliga. (cth)
