There are many good reasons to join a sports club. At the forefront are movement and community. With a subsidy of 40 euros, the federal government and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) now want to persuade people who are reluctant to exercise and hesitant sports enthusiasts to join a sports club. The so-called sports club check is now available for 150,000 new members.
The offer is part of a new advertising campaign with the slogan “Your club: Sport, only better.”, which is intended to encourage people in Germany to do more sport and exercise and at the same time strengthen sports clubs. Because many of the approximately 17,700 sports clubs in NRW have major problems with young people. In addition, since the lockdowns and restrictions during the corona pandemic, many people have left because there were no sporting (team) activities. As a result, many people, especially children, have become fatter and less athletic.
The federal government and especially Interior and Sports Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) now want to counteract this trend: “We want the clubs to win new members again. Because sport helps to keep our society together, especially in difficult times,” she says.
Everything you need to know about the sports club cheque:
- The sports club check serves as a New membership fee in a participating sports club.
- If the membership is more expensive than 40 euros, the additional costs be taken over by yourself.

- The last possibility to cash a sports club check is the October 31, 2023.
- Per person only one sports club check can be redeemed.

The campaign also includes funding of 1,000 euros each for campaigns and partnerships to recruit members, which 4,000 sports clubs can apply to the DOSB for. From April on the Campaign website sportnurbesser.de a “movement map” can also go online, which then enables a simple nationwide search for sports offers in one’s own region.
Until the end of February 2023, municipalities, in particular sports and health authorities, can apply throughout Germany in cooperation with at least one local sports club for rental offers in public spaces. A total of 150 of these offers including training equipment are available. This should give citizens easy and free access to outdoor sports materials so that they can do sports directly.
