Starfield Reveals New Details During Q&A: Contraband, Faction Play, Pacifist Mode, And Much More

It sounds weird after 5 years of waiting, but there are 20 days left until the launch of Starfield. The truth is that we have not had much information during the development process after the initial announcement, but the final stretch is turning out to be especially sweet thanks to the constant trickle of details.

We have recently learned about the history of Starfield prior to our arrival and that the game is already in the Gold phase (finished), but the thing does not end there. Emil Pagliarulo and Will Shendesign director and mission design director respectively, participated in a Questions and answers (via Starfield Wiki) that revealed very interesting details about the space adventure.

Expanding our knowledge about Starfield

Buy houses and properties. The answer was affirmative in both cases: we will have different houses in cities and other locations that we can acquire to establish bases or have it as the main one. In fact, Pagliarulo points out that we can obtain one by completing “something”. A good alternative for those who do not like building houses.

Benefits and features of the “Kids’ Stuff” trait. This trait allows us to visit our parents and give them a percentage of our earnings. Shen points out that our parents will resemble us based on the character we create, although it won’t be exact. For his part, Pagliarulo notes that it’s similar to Fallout 3 and 4, adding that picking this trait holds a few surprises. Apparently, it is not a simple money pit.

Trait and Background System. We have seen that we have many options to customize and specialize our character. We not only define the appearance, statistics and strengths, but also a past that will bring us certain positive and negative points. Shen recommends digging into this system and trying different combinations. On the other hand, Pagliarulo gives an example:

As far as delving into a character’s backstory, that’s entirely up to you. I love creating my own inside story. For example, my most recent character is a worker named Mitch Dombrowski. He’s a big, warm-hearted space trucker, and though he’ll do whatever it takes to defend himself, he’ll never shoot first. He’s like Han Solo’s sweetest older brother. And yes, there are Traits and Backgrounds that support that kind of approach.

Pacifist mode was another of the questions related to the trait system. They admit that it is almost impossible to beat the game without hurting other people, although there are many tools to avoid most conflicts. In addition, we can carry non-lethal weapons. In conclusion: we can probably complete it without killing anyone (of our own free will), but doing damage is inevitable.

Smuggling, crimes and prisons. The Starfield Direct allowed us to see that there is contraband in Starfield. Shen and Pagliarulo confirmed that there are objects considered as such and that we have to take special measures with them if we do not want to be intercepted by the authorities. “And yes, you can hide them by using special ship modules that you can acquire.” They add that the economy of the game is fixed and that it can change depending on our abilities.

And what happens if we are caught smuggling, breaking the law or committing a crime? There are several options: when we are arrested, we pay the fine or we go to jail, the system of which is similar to Skyrim. We can also escape, although this implies that our image will be marked in a universe with laws and governments.

Factions Game. I already told you about the expectations for the faction system and power struggles. Now we can say that it does indeed look like Fallout: New Vegas and skyrim. Each faction will have its own plot and we will be able to act as a double agent. Pagliarulo points out that we can infiltrate the Crimson Fleet as an agent of the United Colonies, but we can choose at any time to switch sides or benefit a third party. He references the movie “Donnie Brasco”.

Works that have influenced Starfield. “Star Wars, the original version of Battlestar Galactica, Space: 1999, Buck Rogers, Battle Beyond the Stars, Ice Pirates… and let’s not forget the classic Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (…) Contact, Interstellar , 2001: A Space Odyssey and even Event Horizon“.

Other details: There are a total of 20 companions. Their stories vary, although the most interesting are the members of Constellation. We only have to pay them once when hiring them and they don’t level up. Each has their own abilities. And finally, time does not pass in the game when we do not play.
