- Special prize “Republic” awarded to journalists Oliver Hollenstein and Oliver Schröm for cum-ex research
Five outstanding journalistic works were honored with the STERN Prize 2023 at a festive award ceremony in Hamburg this evening.
The following journalists will be honored for their excellent work:
“Story of the Year”:
Katharina Kühn, Marc Rosenthal, Hajo Seppelt, Peter Wozny, “How God created us – Coming Out in the Catholic Church”, The First
“Egon Erwin Kisch Prize”:
Rudolf Novotny, “I want to be a normal woman. Just like that”, Zeit Magazin
“Investigation”:
Jan C. Wehmeyer, “RBB Affair,” Business Insider
“Local”:
Joachim Frank, “Research on the abuse scandal in the Archdiocese of Cologne / Cardinal Woelki”, Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and ksta.de
“Photo Story of the Year”:
Nanna Heitmann, “War Is Peace”, Die Zeit
In addition to the awards in the five competition categories, this year the STERN editors-in-chief awarded the “Republic Prize” to the journalists Oliver Hollenstein and Oliver Schröm for their cum-ex research and thus honored their outstanding investigative achievements.

The Nannen price remains the STERN price
The Nannen Prize became the STERN Prize shortly before it was awarded in the summer of 2022 – and the award will continue as such for the time being. A research group at the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich is examining Henri Nannen’s past and the early years of STERN with particular meticulousness – the result of the investigation will not be anticipated, the name of the award will then be re-evaluated in the light of the research results.
