CDMX.- A rebellion in Morena and some of her allies in Congress postponed the discussion of the reform that restricts the powers of the Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF) before political parties and legislators.

According to deputies, a group of 90 legislators, 60 of them from Morena, rejects the initiative, considering it “retrograde”, since it would limit the rights of minorities.

Although the coordinator of Morena in San Lázaro, Ignacio Mier, assured yesterday that the reform to the Court would be approved, the rebellion of morenistas and allies postponed the discussion in the Constitutional Points Commission.

Deputies from Morena, led by Hamlet García and Emmanuel Reyes Carmona, called on their peers to comply with their moral obligation to vote against.

Salma Luévano, deputy for the transgender community and president of the Diversity Commission, stated: “we are not going to allow this regressive reform, we are not going to allow them to take away the little that they have given us, we urgently need more spaces.”

The constitutional reform proposes stopping political rights lawsuits promoted by women, the disabled, migrants, indigenous and transgender people. In addition, it protects party leaders against internal lawsuits in the appointment of leaders, and ties the hands of the Electoral Tribunal, in case of challenges by militants.

AMLO criticized the TEPJF and said that he does not see this body with “good eyes” because it has done “improper things.”

Although he admitted that he was not very aware of the initiative being analyzed in the Chamber of Deputies, he considered that the Court is not a reliable body.
