Insults, calls for rape, death threats… the former correspondent of a Brussels press agency has been the target of several online smear campaigns. Since the coronavirus crisis, the phenomenon has become more and more widespread.

Ihen she was a Brussels correspondent for the North Macedonian news agency MIA, Tanja Milevska repeatedly bore the brunt of online violence. These episodes have, among other things, pushed her to lay down her pen.

The first attack comes in July 2020, following a tweet linked to North Macedonia and Victor Orban. “There, it is the total outburst. It went on for weeks and weeks. It was a surge of hatred: threats of rape, Photoshop montages… I must have received hundreds and hundreds of messages, ”says the ex-journalist. She is convinced that this large-scale attack was organized by the far-right political party. In the absence of material elements, however, it cannot provide proof.
