HOUSTON – The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) issued a weather watch beginning Thursday as high temperatures could lead to a sharp increase in demand for electrical power.

Surveillance will be effective between June 15 and 21. Texans should know that we are forecasting higher demand due to the higher temperatures expected this week and next,” said Pablo Vegas, ERCOT President and CEO.

“Grid conditions are normal when we issue a weather alert. ERCOT continues to monitor conditions closely and will implement all available tools to manage the network and continue our reliability-first approach to operations, always prioritizing network reliability.”

ERCOT is eyeing the possibility of a record peak demand later this week. Last year, ERCOT set 11 peak demand records, surpassing 80 GW for the first time. The current record of 80,148 MW was set on July 20, 2022.

The entity recommends that the community take measures to restrict the use in homes of electronic devices that demand greater use of electricity such as washing machines, dryers and air conditioners during the hours of greatest consumption and highest temperatures.

Most of the greater Houston area is covered by an excessive heat warning, which will be renewed for the rest of the week due to the high temperatures that are expected for the next few days.

It happened in an area under construction at Friendswood High School.
