On Friday, April 21, 2023, from 3:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., there will be a nationwide rail strike in Germany.

Therefore, on April 21, 2023, no cross-border trains will be able to travel to and from Germany until at least 11 a.m. Massive delays and train cancellations are also to be expected in the hours after the strike has ended – traffic is only slowly being ramped up again. Travelers are therefore asked to find out more information before their journey – details of the connections are constantly updated. Night train connections from/to Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands are already affected from the night of April 20th to April 21st.

Timetable changes in long-distance traffic

In long-distance traffic, there will be changes to numerous connections from, to and via Germany during the strike period and also in the hours afterwards. Due to scheduled construction work at the Deutsches Eck between Salzburg and Kufstein, the Railjet trains with the destination stations of Innsbruck, Bregenz, Zurich and Bolzano will be operated with buses in this section all day long. RJX trains from/to Munich start and end in Salzburg Hbf, the IC and ICE trains from/to Passau are routed briefly to Schärding. Long-distance trains from Austria and Switzerland via Lindau-Reutin start and end in St. Margrethen, those via the Tauern/Ennstal route start and end in Salzburg Hbf and long-distance trains via the Brenner route start and end in Kufstein and Innsbruck.

Timetable changes in local transport

Short-distance trains from, to and via Germany are operated. In Salzburg, trains on line S3 begin and end in the direction of Freilassing in Salzburg Liefering, trains on line S2 begin and end in Salzburg Hbf. In Upper Austria, local trains in the direction of Passau only go to/from Schärding. Local trains in the direction of Simbach/Inn begin and end in Braunau am Inn. In Vorarlberg, trains in the direction of Lindau-Reutin will end in Lochau-Hörbranz, and in Tyrol local transport in the direction of Mittenwald will only run to/from Scharnitz. Rail replacement buses can be made available for some of the short-distance connections – travelers can find more details at oebb.at.

Night trains also affected

Night trains (Nightjet and EuroNight) are also affected by the strike measures: There will be cancellations, partial cancellations and diversions. Already in the night from Thursday, April 20th to Friday, April 21st, the night trains to/from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and France cannot run. In the night from Friday, April 21 to Saturday, April 22, night trains should be possible again as planned.

Information for affected travelers

Travelers are asked to find out about their planned connections in the ÖBB timetable information before starting their journeyScottytheÖBB App or atÖBB customer serviceat 05-1717-0. Even after the strike has ended, restrictions and delays in train services are still to be expected. The train connection for affected Sparschiene tickets that are valid on the day of the strike (April 21, 2023) is deemed to have been lifted. These tickets, as well as other tickets booked for a trip from/to/via Germany on the day of the strike, can be canceled and refunded if the trip is not taken. For those night trains that are affected by cancellations or partial cancellations due to the strike, tickets can be canceled and refunded free of charge.
