Study reveals positive impact of higher education on African Americans

MIAMI. – African Americans in Florida with a college education will earn an average of $8,500 more annually than African Americans without a college education, according to a recent study by the Helios Education Foundation and the University of Florida Institute of Higher Education.

Research shows that when an African-American student in Florida graduates from a four-year college, the likelihood of earning above 50% of the state’s average salary increases.

Analyzing the results of the study, Paul Luna, president and CEO of the Helios Education Foundationstated that “education is a life-changing investment and that your institution is committed to creating more opportunities for student success in higher education in Florida.”

“The study strongly demonstrates that efforts to increase college enrollment rates have a substantial return on investment for high school graduates in Florida and for the state itself.”

Another finding from the study that analyzed more than 90,000 students over several years is that African Americans experience a 40% greater chance of graduating if they enroll in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), compared to those who enroll in predominantly white institutions.

Likewise, it establishes African American college graduates are 36.6% more likely to stay and live in Florida for around three decades.

According to the last census, Florida’s black population is 3.3 million people, representing 16% of the state’s total.
