In Berlin, a professor at a university supervises an average of 58 students. In Brandenburg there are 57 students. Both federal states are thus in the middle of the field in a comparison of the federal states.

This is the result of a current survey by the German University Association (DHV), the lobby of professors at universities, which the DHV journal “Research and Teaching” has now published. The figures refer to the year 2021, the magazine refers to the Federal Statistical Office.

As reported, the nationwide average for the care ratio is one in 63. This is a slight improvement compared to 2020, according to the report.

In a comparison of the federal states, Brandenburg is in ninth place, Berlin in tenth place. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Thuringia (each one to 43) offer the best conditions. North Rhine-Westphalia has by far the worst (one in 85), while Hesse (one in 66), Rhineland-Palatinate (one in 62) and Bavaria (one in 61) are also in the bottom places.

In absolute numbers, 135,198 students were enrolled at Berlin universities, with 2,344 professors. The figures also include the art colleges, but not the universities of applied sciences.

With NRW, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Hesse, there are only five federal states with more students – a sign of how many students Berlin attracts as a university location. Lower Saxony and Hesse have fewer professors than Berlin.

In Brandenburg there are 35,489 students and 622 professors.
