The German Film Awards took place in the capital on Friday evening. Most of the awards went to “Nothing New in the West”, but the Golden Lola went to another film.

It is the most important award for filmmakers: the German Film Prize has been awarded since 1951. Same on Friday evening. Numerous stars such as Karoline Herfurth or Fahri Yardim walked the red carpet in Berlin.

Most awards for “Nothing New in the West”

Actor Felix Kammerer, who recently caused a stir with “Nothing New in the West”, also appeared at the award ceremony. The anti-war drama was considered a favorite at the film awards from the start. In fact, the film adaptation of the novel also scooped up the most trophies, including the silver Lola.

The film had already won four Oscars in the US in March. In Berlin he was honored on Friday evening for music, camera work and sound design. Felix Kammerer and Albrecht Schuch each received a Lola for “best leading actor” and “best supporting actor”.

Golden Lola for “The Teacher’s Room”

The Golden Lola, however, went to another film: the drama “The Teacher’s Room” by Ilker Çatak about a conflict in a school. Actress Leonie Benesch plays a teacher who wants to solve a series of thefts at her school and decides to secretly let a camera run in the staff room.

The film, which is currently in cinemas, won a total of five awards. For example, Leonie Benesch was honored as “best actress”, Ilker Çatak for “best director”. “The Teacher’s Room” also received awards in the categories “Best Screenplay” and “Best Editing”.

Special prize for Volker Schlöndorff

Director Volker Schlöndorff, known among other things for “The Tin Drum”, was honored with the Honorary Award of the Academy for outstanding services to German film. Hollywood star John Malkovich and other filmmakers paid tribute to his work via video.

The German Film Prize is one of the most important awards in the industry. The nominations and awards are endowed with a total of around three million euros for new projects. The money comes from the house of Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens). Around 1,600 guests were invited to the award ceremony in the theater on Potsdamer Platz. The evening was moderated by Jasmin Shakeri.
