Surprise in election in the Bronx: Republican ahead

In what has been one of the biggest surprises of election night in the city, the Republican candidate for the 13th council district in the Bronx Kristy Marmorato declares the winner against the current councilwoman Marjorie Velázquez, which means that the county of the Salsa would take a Republican Party seat for the first time in 40 years.

Velázquez faced major opposition after he reversed his stance and supported local zoning changes pushed by Mayor Eric Adams to allow more development in his district.

With 81% of the votes counted, Marmorato is ahead with 52.8% over Velázquez’s 47.2%.

The 13th district is majority Democratic (there are more registered as Democrats than as Republicans and/or Independents) and about 45% of the population is Hispanic.
