Suspect of selling deadly dose of fentanyl to Honduran youth in Silver Spring appears in court

The parents of Olvin Javier Amaya Rodríguez, a young Honduran man who died in December from an overdose of fentanyl, are demanding justice at a time when the person suspected of selling the drug to their son is being criminally prosecuted.

Through tears, the victim’s father indicated that he hopes that the authorities will take the defendant off the streets given the possibility that he has sold substances to other people.

“It would be nice if they put him in jail because maybe he didn’t just kill my son, maybe he killed a lot of people that you didn’t realize,” Miguel Amaya said exclusively with Telemundo 44.

Similarly, the mother of the 22-year-old believes that her son was not the only victim.

“I don’t care anymore because my son is gone, but it’s good that they caught him so he doesn’t continue selling to other young people,” said the woman who preferred to remain anonymous.

The facts of the case date back to December 25, 2022 when Amaya Rodríguez contacted Junior Salvador Álvarez Paz and asked him for the drug. The investigation revealed that the two met in a restaurant and completed the transaction in nine minutes.

However, two hours and 34 minutes later, they found the young man dead.

“At mere 2 pm they told me that my son was dead. He supposedly told me that he was fine, it was a dream that he gave him and that’s it,” his mother explained.

Against Álvarez Paz, 23, there are charges of involuntary manslaughter and drug distribution. The maximum penalties would give him up to 30 years in prison. The defendant appeared on Wednesday for the court hearing.

His father recounted that the young man worked in North Carolina, but that many of his friends were in the Maryland area, where he grew up since he was eleven years old. His burial took place on January 7, 2023.
