Controlling diabetes involves reducing blood sugar. Replacing soft drinks, chocolate milk and boxed juices with healthier choices, such as coffee, tea or water, is an efficient strategy to reduce the risk of premature death in patients with metabolic disease.
The conclusion comes from a research published in the The BMJ journal, last Wednesday (19/4). By analyzing data on the health and diet of 15,486 adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it was possible to establish relationships between the drinks most consumed by them and the risk of early death.
types of drinks
For 18 years, consumption of 8 types of beverages was monitored among volunteers: 1) sugar-sweetened beverage, 2) artificially sweetened beverage, 3) fruit juice, 4) coffee, 5) tea, 6) low-fat milk. of fat, 7) whole milk and 8) plain water.
According to the results, participants who consumed the most sugar-sweetened beverages (more than one serving a day) had a 20% higher risk of early death compared to those who consumed less than one serving a day.

Orange is another natural food that can help control diabetes, because in addition to helping to reduce cholesterol levels, it has fibers that help compress the time when fruit sugar is absorbed in the body. In this way, it acts in the control of blood glucose. In addition, it has a low glycemic index.

The good news was that higher intake of beverages such as coffee, water, tea and low-fat milk resulted in lower risk for patients. People who increased their coffee consumption after being diagnosed with diabetes reduced their risk of premature death by 18% when compared to those who did not change the pattern they had after being diagnosed.
Recommendation
The researchers point out that the study is observational, that is, it is not possible to establish a direct cause and effect relationship. However, the data indicate the importance of choices related to the consumption of beverages for the health of patients. “Overall, these results provide additional evidence that emphasizes the importance of beverage choices in maintaining overall health among adults with diabetes.”
