The first public e-highway is to be built in Sweden within the coming months – vehicles will then be supplied with electricity while driving. The corresponding preparations are underway. That reports that Online magazine Euronews.

In Sweden, an approximately 20-kilometer stretch of motorway is now being converted into a permanently electrified road – the first of its kind in the world.

Trucks can be charged while driving on this e-highway. Tests with passenger cars are to be carried out later, but for the time being the Swedish road authority Trafikverket is restricting their project. The Scandinavian country has pioneered road electrification with several pilot projects, including the world’s first temporary electric road. Now comes the next step.

Dynamic charging while driving

The aim is to show that dynamic charging makes electric vehicles more efficient. Users can cover longer distances with smaller batteries and less waiting time at charging stations if they simply charge their cars while driving. “We believe that electrification is the way forward to decarbonize the transport sector and we are working with a range of solutions,” Jan Pettersson, director of strategic development at Trafikverket, the Swedish transport administration, told Euronews Next. The chosen motorway, the European route E20, connects Hallsberg and Örebro. The charging method for the E20 is yet to be determined, but there are three types of charging currently under discussion: catenary systems, inductive systems and conductive systems.

Sweden wants to expand another 3,000 kilometers of “electric roads” by 2045 and is therefore still examining which system is most suitable.
