French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized the united stance of France and Europe after a fuss over statements by him on the Taiwan conflict. Both are interested in the status quo and a peaceful solution to the question, the position is constant, said Macron tonight in Amsterdam. It is about protecting the unity of Europe towards China and ensuring a unified approach by the EU.

However, France does not support any provocations with regard to Taiwan and is in favor of clarity and respect. Before his trip to China, he exchanged views on the subject with US President Joe Biden.

On the return flight from China, Macron said in an interview: “The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans should be followers on this issue and adapt to the American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction.” So it would be a trap for the Europeans of being caught up in foreign crises at a time when one’s own strategic position is being clarified. Europe then threatens to be a vassal between the USA and China, although one can be a third pole.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte agreed with Macron’s call for more strategic European sovereignty. “Europe doesn’t have to be a playing field, it has to be a player,” said Rutte. Europe must become less dependent on China, among other things, when it comes to raw materials and high-quality technology.

Europe must also have a clear geopolitical voice, especially with regard to Europe’s green and digital goals. At the same time, however, Rutte confirmed that this was not a weakening of the alliance with the USA. Europe is a reliable and solid ally of the USA. “The transatlantic bond is essential.”
