TeamViewer has presented an extensive update of its remote access software. With the new version, the core product of the Göppingen-based provider also has its own name for the first time: TeamViewer Remote. A lot has happened technically, TeamViewer Remote wants to be more accessible and secure.

One of the biggest innovations in the new version is probably the account requirement, which even applies to free users, but initially only affects those who offer help, but not those who seek help. In this way, the company wants to ensure that only those who also provide information about themselves offer help. This data is used because the recipient side will in future receive information about the region of the world someone is trying to take over the computer from TeamViewer.

Likewise, TeamViewer then provides information about the e-mail address and the booked license type of the help provider. This is intended to ensure more transparency and thus strengthen security: Anyone who has booked support from a German provider but is now receiving a connection request from the USA should listen carefully, said Chief Product Officer Hendrik Witt at the virtual product presentation.

In the future, TeamViewer users will also have the option of accessing third-party computers via a web app. Until now, this required desktop software. The download tool and the web application should look identical. On top of that, the management console is now also being used in the desktop client, which was previously only available as a separate web-only application.

Another new feature concerns the establishment of a connection between the parties involved. In this way, help-seekers can invite others to their desktop session via a one-click implementation. Previously, an ID and a password were required for this – this should remain possible, but in future it will also work via a shared link via e-mail, WhatsApp and Co. As a security feature, the shared links are deactivated after the first click.

In addition, they want to open up TeamViewer further in the direction of integration into third-party applications, according to Witt. However, no further details have yet been released. However, it is even conceivable that power users could integrate TeamViewer into their own applications independently and independently of the provider in the future. At the same time, they want to dovetail the internal tool landscape more closely. The professional monitoring tool Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) was previously an independent tool, but is now also being used in the TeamViewer Remote Client.

Visually, TeamViewer also comes with some innovations. The company intends to introduce the new, simplified design concept in its other products in the future and thus ensure “simpler user journeys”, as Witt put it. Among other things, the developers have revised the toolbar; the interface also gets a full-text search. TeamViewer Remote is now available as Download at the userrespectively as web application available available.
