After touting the yoke as the future of driving, Tesla is backtracking. Since today, the Tesla Model S and Model X are available with a much more traditional round steering wheel.

The round steering wheel in a Tesla Model S

Tesla has caused a lot of ink to flow since the announcement of its new Model S and Model X, with its unique interior. At the center of all attention is the centerpiece of the passenger compartment: the yoke. This rectangular steering wheel is very divisive, and Tesla is today abandoning this battle, offering customers a round steering wheel if they wish.

The debated yoke

This yoke steering wheel which was unveiled in 2021 by Tesla has never left anyone indifferent. In fact, the change in driving style that is necessary to maneuver with a rectangular steering wheel is not acceptable to everyone, and some customers then went so far as to cancel their order from Tesla seeing that they wouldn’t have the option of keeping a round steering wheel.

The first questions about the legality of a yoke naturally arose as soon as these models went on sale in Europe, but it is clear that it is indeed legal, which has also enabled the manufacturer to deliver its first Tesla Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid at the very end of 2022 on the old continent.

The yoke has a significant advantage in terms of visibility, but for some it brings more constraints than advantage. We also tried the Tesla Model S Plaid recently, asking ourselves a question about this yoke: the solution to what problem?

This is indeed something that comes up frequently among first-time users, who still wonder today what was wrong with a round steering wheel. Anyway, it’s only a little surprise to see the arrival of the option which is now available on the online configurator, which offers a free choice between a yoke and a traditional round steering wheel on Tesla Models. S and Model X. For those who have already received their car with a yoke and who would like to switch to a round steering wheel, this is available from next March, for 900 euros.

As a reminder, this round steering wheel has already been seen several times before the release of the new generation Tesla Model S and Model X, almost two years ago. In addition, persistent rumors about the arrival of a steering wheel without switch on the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have existed for many months, and it is likely that this steering wheel will quickly be generalized across the entire range. The next few weeks will undoubtedly provide an answer to this point.
