Tesla, the flagship brand for electric vehicles, has been lobbying governments to “electrify” transportation systems for years.

While doing so, in some countries (especially in the United States) the company has been investing in its own network of battery charging points so that its products (cars) have accessible places to replace their batteries.

Tesla’s charging stations, called Superchargers, are designed to allow electric cars to travel longer distances without stopping for too long.

The Supercharger network, which follows a Tesla-proprietary standard and comprises tens of thousands of charging points around the world, is an essential part of Tesla’s marketing strategy to make electric cars a more practical option.

Tesla changes strategy with its electric cars

In this scenario, we must analyze the novelty released this Wednesday, February 15 by the Government of the United States: Tesla will open part of its charging network in that country to electric vehicles made by competing brands.

The decision is part of a federal program involving US$7.5 billion to “electrify” the country’s highways and reduce carbon emissions.

Thus, some of Tesla’s charging stations will become universal charging points.

As reported, by the end of 2024, Tesla will “open” 3,500 new and existing Superchargers along American highways, as well as 4,000 slower chargers in other locations, such as hotels and restaurants, for customers with rival Elon Musk-branded cars.

In return, Tesla will receive a subsidy that was not disclosed in detail.

Tesla owns 17,700 superchargers, representing about 60 percent of all fast chargers in the United States, publishes Reuters.

Tesla’s network isn’t the only one. VolkswagenFor example, it has a program called Electrify America, the goal of which is to build a network of fast-charging stations for electric vehicles.

General MotorsFor its part, it has a partnership with the charging company EVgo to build more than 2,700 fast-charging stations in the United States by 2025.
