The countries with the largest tropical forests on the planet urged this Wednesday the “rich world” to do their part to help preserve these biomes and pay to keep the forest standing, in the closure of the Amazon Summitwhich took place in the Brazilian city of Belém.
According to the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, “You cannot talk about tropical forests and climate change without addressing the historical responsibility of developed countries.”
“We are going to COP28 with the objective of telling the rich world that if they want to effectively preserve what there is of forest, they have to put money not only to take care of the forest canopy but to take care of the people who live down there, who want to work” , declared the Brazilian president.
In a joint ten-point communiqué, called “United for our forests”the eight Amazonian countries emphasized the need to combine environmental preservation with economic growth.
