The death toll rises to 54 after an alleged attack during an Islamist political rally in Pakistan

The death toll after the suspected suicide bombing in Pakistan on Sunday rose to 54according to officials on Monday.

“Those responsible will be identified and punished,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a statement. “The Pakistani nation, law enforcement agencies and our protectors will never allow the cowardly tactics of the enemy to succeed.”

Counterterrorism officers investigating the blast said they suspected the Islamic State group might be behind the attacks, authorities said in a statement.

However, so far no terrorist organization has yet claimed responsibility for the events.where dozens of people were also injured, at a political rally in northwest Pakistan, according to local officials.

The event was organized by one of the main Islamic parties, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F)in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The JUI-F pointed out in a series of posts on social networks that the funerals of the victims began this Monday.

“All eyes were full of tears, all faces were sad”said a message, which was posted along with a video of a number of people carrying and praying over the coffins.

For his part, the party’s leader, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, said in a statement that “Allah accepts the martyrdom of the martyrs and grants patience to their families and gives complete healing to the wounded.”

The first reports of the explosion on Sunday pointed out that 40 people died and 150 were injured, but the authorities had warned that the numbers could be increasing.
