Bethesda and Microsoft have made sure that we have a good load of information about Starfield. We know about everything, from the enormous number of planets that we can explore to the construction of ships and bases. However, there is a section that they have not talked about too much: the history of the universe.
Starfield presented a humanity situated in 2330 AD., quite advanced on a technological level (not so much to feel very fantasy) and that made you feel that it had a very interesting story behind it. It is enough to take a look at the publication of the factions again to remember that the United Colonies (CU) and the Freestar Collective they have warred for many years to end up in a very strange peace, which resembles a very delicate cold war.
We now know that this is just the tip of the iceberg, as Bethesda has updated the Starfield official website with a chronology which recounts the events that occurred between 2050 (not so far from our time) and 2330, which is when our space adventure begins. What the hell has happened in those years?
An unprecedented spatial expansion
Starfield’s story begins in the year 2050, when humans finally reach Mars. Another 50 years, 2100, are enough for them to leave Earth and live in space with some stability. Once the barrier of the red planet has been overcome, space exploration intensifies: humans arrive at alpha centauri (4.37 light years from Earth) in the year 2156. After this, the people divide into factions and a stage of foundations begins:
- 2159: the United Colonies (CU) are founded
- 2160: The city of Nueva Atlántida is founded and a year later the capital of the United Colonies is named.
- 2167: Solomon Coe colonizes Cheyenne and founds the first settlement there, which eventually became the town of Akila. Years later, 2188, Solomon Coe invites Volii to forge a new alliance and a year later the Freestar Collective is officially founded.
The pieces are on the board. begin the conflicts between peoples. In 2194, the people of the Narion system ask the United Colonies to remove their ship The Clinic from Deepala’s orbit. The CU refuse. The people of Narion end up joining the Freestar Collective and a year later defenses are mobilized in the system. The CU respond with the mobilization of their fleet in 2196 and the inevitable happens: the first war between the two factions breaks out.
The war between the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective lasts until the year 2216, when both sides decide to sign the Treaty of Narion after feeling the wear and tear of war. The term “Colonized Systems” is mentioned for the first time.
In the year 2275, Sebatian Banks founds Constellation along with Chloe Bao, Aja Mamasa and others. All the founders are scientists, doctors, explorers and a former smuggler. In other words: people who seek knowledge. The headquarters of the Lodge is located in Nueva Atlántida. Years later, 2310, they acquired the first artifact.
The war is not long in returning. The Freestar Collective establishes agrarian operations in the Platea Vesta (Lunara system) in 2307 and only a year later the United Colonies declare that the collective has broken the Treaty of Narion by colonizing a fourth star system. Needless to say, diplomacy fails, the CU lay siege to Vesta and eradicate all the people who defended the planet. The Colonial War begins.
The Battle of Cheyenne (2311) ends the Colonial War. A small civilian and military fleet destroys the CU armada with hit-and-run tactics: appear, attack, and quickly leave. In response to these tactics, the CU founds La Vanguardia in 2315, a civilian army (militia) who swear to defend the colonies in exchange for citizenship.
The new CU plans also include the closure of the Corps of Navigators in 2320. Their leader, Sarah Morgan, joins Constellation. A year later, the shipbuilder magnate Walter Stroud becomes a patron of Constellation. These events cause people from all over the universe to join Constellation:
- Vladimir Sall of the Crimson Fleet (pirates) in 2322.
- Theologian Matteo Khatri in 2325.
- Noel, a renowned scientist, in 2326.
- Sam Coe, Freestar Commando, and his daughter Cora in 2327.
- Andrea in 2328.
Finally, Constellation acquires the star station L-868 in 2328 and modifies it into a deep space scanning super-tool they call “The Eye” in their eagerness to further investigate the mysterious artifact, which is rediscovered by Barrett in the archives. And only two years later, 2330, we appear onstage and Starfield begins.
It is normal not to recognize most of the names, but knowing/having all this information at hand will be very useful when starting our adventure. We already have a context of everything that happened, especially in everything related to the conflicts between factions. Our adventure will begin in Constellation, although Bethesda has made it clear that It doesn’t have to be our destiny. The wait is almost over. September 6 is almost around the corner.
