Crime is one of the most prioritized areas for the government

And there will be tougher punishments for gang criminals. This is what Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) said during the press conference on Thursday morning.

– There is nothing to suggest that criminals in Sweden intend to stop shooting each other dead just because we said we are changing course, said Ulf Kristersson.

New main rule in privacy legislation

During the press conference, the government announced that it is now proceeding with a proposal for a new main rule in the confidentiality legislation. According to the government, current legislation is an obstacle to effective crime fighting.

– We need to move several steps to really be able to say that we stand on the side of the crime victim and that we protect the children’s perspective, said Minister of Energy and Industry Ebba Busch (KD) with reference to the high-profile case at Morö Backe in Skellefteå this summer.

The main rule the government wishes to introduce means that authorities must be able to share information with other law enforcement agencies when necessary to prevent crime.

Enhanced coercive measures

The government must also investigate whether there are expanded opportunities for preventive coercive measures to prevent and detect criminal activity in criminal networks.

During Thursday, the government will introduce a bill on tougher punishments for violent gang confrontations. The bill also contains tougher penalties for several crimes that are common in the criminal environment – such as serious illegal threats and drug sales.

– The aim is to show that the government has now been in office for 100 days – now they are starting to deliver their reforms in the area that is the most prioritized by these parties, says SVT domestic political commentator Elisabeth Marmorstein in Morgonstudion.
