After President Andrés Manuel López Obrador proposed the elimination of the National Migration Institute (INM) due to the events that occurred in Juárez, the head of the State Human Rights Commission (CEDH), Néstor Armendáriz said that said institution has already been exceeded to address the phenomenon of human mobility.

The fire occurred at the INM facilities after a protest over the lack of water and food, and left 39 dead from various Central and South American countries.

“Given the possibility that the National Institute of Migration disappears and that a National Commission for Immigration and Foreign Affairs is created in its place, the first thing would be to know the details of the corresponding initiative, since what is really important is not the name or the name given to the body in charge of this function”, said the head of said body.

Nestor said that the INM has already been exceeded to address all aspects of the phenomenon as complex as migration, which requires, in principle, a definition of the country’s migration policy.

“And even I believe that it is also the management that is done at the diplomatic level with other countries, those of origin and with the main country of destination and ensuring that everything is with a human rights approach and that it is placed at the center of the entire dignity of people”.

In the same way, the human rights defender expressed that it is necessary to be aware that migration is inherent to human nature and that it has existed since all of history and will continue to exist.

“The important thing is also that, regardless of the name and the place, it has the personnel, the equipment and the necessary infrastructure to fully attend to this phenomenon,” the president said.

According to the investigations carried out by experts in field criminalistics and agents of the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the 68 migrants who were locked up in a confinement area of the Migration Institute entrenched themselves and they set fire to the place, which caused the tragedy on March 27.
