Oxfam Mexico has suggested to the Mexican government, headed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorto participate in the tax discussions in Latin America and the Caribbean to form a fiscal block that the governments of Chile and Colombia are leading.

“We think it is critical that the Mexican State participate in regional and global discussions on tax modifications. There is talk in Latin America that the origin of a new social pact, to generate better conditions for prosperity for the benefit of all, has at its core a fiscal pact that transforms unequal power relations,” he said. Alexandra Haasexecutive director of Oxfam Mexico, on Thursday at the presentation of a report in the Chamber of Deputies.

The foregoing, Haas commented, would generate the possibilities for democracy to really give citizens what it has promised and has not achieved, which is to have a better life situation.

In the report “Who pays the bill? The myths behind taxes on large fortunes”, prepared by Oxfam, indicate that Mexico has a favorable political context to contribute to a regional movement from fiscal policy actions, which help promote fairer fiscal systems, in favor of the life and care.

Last week, in the framework of the spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, Brazil announced its support for the first summit of finance ministers in Latin America on global taxation and with it for tax reform initiatives that could raise collection, tax wealth and improve the progressivity of the tax design, and thereby improve the response to the economic crisis in the region.

“In Brazil we have always had a long tradition of forming alliances with developing countries. I think the process called by Colombia is really important. It is an example of how we can move towards better taxation. We need to show a commitment that we can raise more in a different and fairer way. The Latin American tax summit is a message that this is possible,” said Guilherme Mello, secretary for economic policy at the Brazilian Ministry of Finance, at the panel “Voices from the Global South: tax systems and multiple crises” that took place in spring meetings.

The first Ministerial Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean will take place on July 27 and 28 in Cartagena, Colombia.
