The Mexican stock market loses 0.87% and ends the week in negative territory

Mexico City, Jul 14 (EFE).- The Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) lost 0.87% this Friday in its main indicator to settle at 53,770.8 units, ending the week operating in negative territory .

Enrique Covarrubias, chief economist of the Actinver financial group, explained to EFE that in the weekly balance the Price and Quotation Index (IPC), the main indicator of the BMV, registered a marginal loss of -0.25%.

This, contrasted the director of Economic and Financial Analysis of Banco Base, Gabriela Siller, “after last week was the only one among the main stock market indices with gains.”

For her part, the specialist pointed out that the appreciation of the peso during the week could have affected the CPI, “since the peso appreciated considerably during the week, which makes it more expensive for foreign investors to invest in Mexico.”

Covarrubias added that within the CPI, all sectors fell, led by communication (-2.1%), which linked three consecutive sessions as the furthest behind and putting pressure on Televisa, América Móvil and Axtel.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that the fall in Industriales (-1.4%) was related to the performance of Volaris, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico and Pinfra.

In the session, the peso appreciated 0.6% against the dollar, trading at 16.74 units per greenback, after being valued at 16.84 the previous day, according to closing data from the Bank of Mexico.

The IPC closed the session at 53,770.8 units, with a loss of 473.21 points and a negative variation of 0.87% compared to the previous day.

The volume traded in the market reached 177 million titles for an amount of 12,078 million pesos (about 721 million dollars or 641.08 million euros at the exchange rate of the day).

Of the 524 firms that traded on the day, 169 ended with their prices rising, 335 had losses and 20 closed without changes.

The titles with the greatest upward variation were from the Corpovael housing construction company (CADU A), with 6.05%; the real estate developer Grupo Gicsa (GICSA B), with 5.5%, and the Grupo Hotelero Santa Fe (HOTEL) with 4.15%.

In contrast, the largest downward variations were from the oil and gas explorer Vista Oil & Gas (VISTA A), with -11.38%; the media conglomerate Grupo Televisa (TLEVISA CPO), with -5.17%, and the airline Volaris (VOLAR A), with -3.81%.

During the day, the four sectors fell, led by industrial (-1.36%), followed by frequent consumption (-0.48%), financial (-0.46%) and materials (- 0.09%). EFE
