Colo Colo will take to the field this Sunday to face Deportes Magallanes for a new edition of the Super Cup. The Albos seek the two-time championship and increase their record, after the titles won in 2017, 2018 and 2022. For its part, the Academy will experience its first time in a match of this magnitude and does not want to be intimidated by the power that, a priori, presents the set of Gustavo Quinteros.

This meeting, in addition to the expectation generated by the dispute of a new cup, has an incredible historical flavor. The story of David Arellano leaving Magallanes together with Quiñones and company to form his own soccer team, was the kickoff for the birth of Colo Colo, the most winning team in Chile.

The Folk Classic

Quickly, the duel between Colo Colo and Magallanes turned into a great rivalry. The leadership of the Carabelero group branded those who left their club as rebels in search of professionalism, so the first meetings between the two had a special flavor for everyone.

From there, a string of matches that sparked sparks and that caused the attention of soccer fans. Nobody wanted to miss a Colo Colo vs. Magallanes, until the descent of those from San Bernardo came. For the first division, the Cacique and the Manojito de Claveles met for the last time on October 19, 1986.occasion in which the albos defeated the Academy 3-0.

However, in Copa Chile they met again. You have to go back to 1992 when, for Copa Chile, both teams were in Group D of the competition. It was May 2 of that year and, for the last date of the group stage, the Whites and the Albicelestes met at the Monumental Stadium. Colo Colo was already classified to the next round and, therefore, presented a more alternative formationsince he had to play Copa Libertadores in a few more days.

Everything started off wonderfully for the cast that, at that time, was directed by Ricardo Dabrowski (due to the absence of Mirko Jozic). It was Freddy Ferragut who put the Cacique ahead after a minute into the game, after hitting a volley after a Gustavo de Luca cross. However, the advantage would not last long for the locals, since Magallanes would equalize with an own goal by John Ahumada at 4 minutes and, at 22, Marcos Fuentes put the visiting team ahead that was looking for qualification.

But it was de Luca who cut any illusion of the Academy to reach the other round. In the 24th minute of the game, he was present on the scoreboard with a typical goal from a center forward. Perched in the six-yard box, he caught a great pass from Garrido and went off to celebrate.

In said set, Colo Colo formed with Alex Whiteley in the bow; John Ahumada, Milton Flores, Reinaldo Hoffman, Freddy Ferragut, Miguel Ramírez, Freddy Lizama, Sergio Villegas, Pedro Arancibia, Carlos de Luca and Rodrigo Garrido.

It was more than 2 thousand people who saw that tie 2 to 2 and that, in the long run, became the last confrontation between two historical Chilean soccer squads and that will meet again on a soccer field this Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the Sausalito stadium in Viña del Mar.
