While the former president Alexander Toledo surrendered to justice in the United States (USA), this Friday the 21st, the Prosecutor’s Office in Peru was part of the mixed request control hearing, which involves the aforementioned, for the Interoceanic case.
The former dignitary, among others involved, is being investigated for the alleged crime of asset launderings due to directing a concession to the Odebrecht company (today Novonor).
“(This occurred) as consideration for the offer of 35 million (dollars) made by the construction company in favor of Toledo. (The money) was conducted through the company of Josef Maiman”, commented the Prosecutor José Domingo Pérez when exiting the session.
The representative of the Public Ministry also gave statements to the media, after leaving the First Preparatory Investigation Court — chaired by the Judge Richard Concepcion Carhuancho— regarding the voluntary surrender of Toledo Manrique to be deported to Peru.
The official was consulted about a request for house arreston behalf of the legal defense of the extraditable, in favor of Toledo after his arrival in the national territory.
“I cannot advance positions that will raise the defense of Mr. Toledo. We understand that, formally, he has not requested it. (…) (But we want) to show that on behalf of the special team (Lava Jato) we are going to defend the position of the society that was aggrieved by these crimes of corruption,” he told RPP.
On the other hand, the official spoke about the Peruvian entourage that will travel to transfer, from the United States to Peru, the person being investigated; this will be brought on a commercial flight by police officers from Interpol.
“I have formally requested, documentarily, that you have to travel on Prosecutor Rafael Vela Barbacoordinator of the Lava Jato special team, and another prosecutor so that there can be due process and transfer of this person,” he said.
At another time, Domingo Pérez specified that the Prosecutor’s Office “will face” the latest announcements of Alexander Toledo about his alleged health problems.
“(Are you trying to evade justice?) They are positions that we are going to to confront, we are going to contradict them, if there are not the elements that support a different situation. We have always been firm for the team led by prosecutor Vela, since we assumed that the law had to be complied with, ”he pointed out.
To this, the prosecutor added that only for the Interoceanic case has a request 20 years and 6 months against the former president. “We understand that in the following weeks the evidence that the Prosecutor’s Office has will be debated,” he said.
