The Senate of the Republic started 2023 with the promise of working for the protection of children in Mexico, this to help girls and boys victims of sexual violencesince it is an illegal act that continues to be committed frequently in the republic, for which reason, through a statement, they ruled that they will operate based on this demographic.
These are the priorities for the Senate of the Republic in 2023, according to its president
Alejandro Armenta, president of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Senators and member of Morena, highlighted three issues for the federal legislature
Josefina Vázquez Mota, Senator of the National Action Party (BREAD), warned that each year 5.4 million children and adolescents are victims of sexual abuse in Mexico, six out of 10 of which occur at home and in 60% of the cases the aggressor is a family member or belongs to the close circle of the family.
The National Action legislator specified that, according to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), In 2019, the Mexican State ranked first in child sexual abuse. He added that, of every thousand cases of sexual abuse against minors, only 100 are reported and, of these, only 10% come before a judge.
As if this were not enough for the cases that are prosecuted, according to the OECD, only 1% receive a conviction. For this reason, through an initiative, the senator proposed reforming the Social Assistance Law (LAS), so that all girls, boys and adolescents who have suffered any type of sexual violence have the right to social assistance.

The reform is intended to serve as a tool that contributes to inhibiting, persecuting, sanctioning and compensating the violations that occurred against this sector of the population, the legislator specified. In this sense, the also former candidate for the Presidency of the Republic said that it is the responsibility of parents and institutions of the State guarantee them a healthy, safe, sound, harmonious and free environment of any act that threatens their physical and emotional development, against their integral development.
Vázquez Mota stressed that many of the cases of child sexual violence are carried out by close beings and, of which, many of the minors and adolescents They do not have comprehensive treatments to repair the damage. For this reason, he affirmed that it is clear that the consequences of sexual violence can be devastating both in the short and long term, especially when the abuser is a trusted figure.
According to data from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), during 2021, within the framework of the pandemic the production and consumption of child pornography in Mexico increased 117%Therefore, this market doubled, in addition to the fact that it is estimated that 21,000 children are kidnapped annually in the country for child sexual exploitation.

The project was referred to the joint commissions of Development and Social Welfare and Legislative Studies for its correct ruling. Finally, the senator stressed that social assistance serves so that the entire population enjoys the same rights and opportunities, safeguarding and seeking to compensate the violated rights, as is the case with the thousands of minors and adolescents who suffer sexual violence.
Finally, it is recalled that from December 15 to January 31, the Chamber of Senators will not be in session, since it is the recess period, the same in which the Permanent Commission enters into force and it does not have the capacity to legislate, Therefore, this reform promoted by the PAN must wait for the next regular session.
