Juanes celebrates his birthday this Wednesday with a guitar in his honor

Rome, Aug 9 (EFE).- The Tower of Pisa, one of the most admired and well-known buildings in the world, began today the celebrations for the 850th anniversary since its first stone was laid on August 9, 1173.

Considered a World Heritage Site by Unesco, together with the whole of the Duomo square in Pisa, the tower is a fundamental example of the Romanesque style, particularly the Pisan Romanesque, and a true emblem of engineering as it has remained leaning since the beginning of its construction due to the instability of the terrain.

To honor its legacy, the city has created a logo for the 850th anniversary that will be projected in the Opera Museum, after a presentation in which they have replicated the seven bells housed in the tower.

On Wednesday night, there will also be a piano concert by maestro Ramin Bahrami, who will perform pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin on the steps of the Cathedral.

It will not be the only activity programmed for the commemoration, since the city has arranged a program that will last until August 9, 2024 and that includes an exhibition that includes the paintings, engravings, photographs and films that have immortalized the work to date. over the years: “The many lives of the bell tower of Pisa”.

Likewise, symphonic music concerts and film projections will also be organized in the “Il Cinema e la torre” cycle.

“The rescue of the bell tower allows us to celebrate the 850th anniversary and appreciate the effort of our ancestors in the arrangement of the monuments in Piazza del Duomo,” said the president of the Opera Primaciale, the monument’s managing entity, Andrea Maestrelli, to the local press.

Although the Tower of Pisa now enjoys good stability, this was not always the case. In the 1990s, the Italian authorities had to close the bell tower to the public and launched a contest of ideas to reinforce its structure and prevent it from collapsing, since the situation was critical.

The first intervention, which consisted of adding lead counterweights, did not solve the problem, so it was finally decided to excavate the earth to reduce the slope of the Tower and guarantee its conservation. EFE
