The US denounces that Russia continues not respecting agreements on Georgia 15 years later

Washington.- USA denounced this monday andhe breached Russia’s 2008 ceasefire agreements in Georgia and expressed his support for the Caucasian country on the 15th anniversary of the Russian invasion.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Bliken, said in a statement that Washington remains determined to demand that Russia comply with the withdrawal of its forces to the positions they held before the start of the conflict and that it allows the unhindered passage of humanitarian aid, as stipulated in the 2008 ceasefire agreement.

“Russia also has to change its recognition of the so-called independence of the Georgian Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions. These actions are essential so that hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people can return to their homes safely and live with dignity,” added Blinken.

The Secretary of State also noted that “as in Ukraine, the people of Georgia have suffered the consequences of Russia’s disdain for international law and the desire to dominate their neighbors.”

In August 2008, Russia invaded Georgia in support of the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia, which days earlier had been captured by troops from Tbilisi.

The Russian intervention led to the withdrawal of Georgian troops in a brief but intense five-day conflict that caused more than 600 deaths.

Two weeks later, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, territories that have functioned in practice as independent states and have applied to join the Russian Federation, although the Kremlin has not accepted the request.
