• Thales has just signed a contract for the electronic coverage of American passports
  • It could be spread over a period of ten years and would exceed 100 million euros
  • Thales also offers other mobile identity solutions: the Digital ID Wallet

Thales has just pulled off a great coup. The French group indeed announces in a press release published this Thursday the signing of an electronic cover contract for American passports with the Government Publishing Office (GPO) of the United States. The latter could last up to ten years.

We do not know the exact amount of this operation, but according to Capitalit falls into the category of large contracts exceeding 100 million euros.

French technology

Specifically, the GPO produces US passports for the Department of State. The technology developed by Thales will be particularly useful for reducing the risk of falsification and alteration of data storage, says the tricolor company. “Thales e-covers maximize and incorporate all the attributes required for an e-passport including security, durability and aesthetics “, she argues.

This news is in any case something to rejoice Tony Lo Brutto, Executive Vice President, Thales Identity and Biometric Solutions, North America: “Providing citizens, businesses and governments with better identity document security is an essential mission for Thales. As a world leader in digital security, Thales offers sophisticated solutions around the world to protect personal identities contained in travel documents. »

Note that Thales has been working on mobile identity offers for some time now. The company notably presented its Digital ID Wallet a few years ago. The latter makes it possible to host identity documents on smartphones.

The company also claims that this solution “offers citizens full control over their personal data, with the freedom to decide what information they share, when and with whom they want to share it. At the same time, it allows public authorities to create a mobile companion to physical identity documents. »

In any case, this announcement from the United States sounds like good news for the French group. His image was somewhat affected last week with the opening of an investigation by the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office on suspicion of corruption in India. In detail, an intermediary from this country claims to have helped the company to win the market for the renovation of Mirage-2000 aircraft, being remunerated by an offshore financial circuit. These accusations are disputed by Thales.
