More than 4,000 organ and cornea transplants were performed in Argentina during 2022, with an increase of 24 percent compared to the previous year, the National Central Single Ablation and Implant Coordinating Institute (Incucai) officially reported this Thursday.

The president of Incucai, Carlos Soratti, highlighted that “in the year that the procurement and transplant ended, they returned to the levels prior to the pandemic, an objective achieved thanks to the commitment of the Ministry of Health of the Nation through the Institute and the provincial agencies, the work and efforts of the health system throughout the country to recover donation activity by offering the opportunity of transplantation to people on the waiting list”.

Then, in dialogue with telam He added that “it must be considered that, due to the effect of the pandemic, since March 2020 activity has fallen markedly in the country, in the region and in the world,” and stressed that “the generation of donors fell by more than 50%, and therefore the number of transplants”.

“After the first year of the pandemic, it stabilized, and towards the end of 2020 and in 2021 a recovery began,” explained the head of Incucai.

At the end of the pandemic tunnel, they began “to work hard on making diagnoses, recognizing the factors that determined the low activity and developing programs and plans to overcome the situation and promote the increase in the generation of corneal donors, a fact that increased the ability to resolve the waiting list for blindness, and pediatric waiting”.

For 2023, Soratti expressed “great expectations because the times to come will be in which emphasis will be placed on the quality of transplants, on access to the waiting list and on access to transplantation, supporting the increase in the donor generation.

Of the total number of transplanted patients, 1,985 received organs, with 1,681 deceased donors and 304 living donors.

A total of 1,367 kidney transplants were performed: 422 liver, 107 heart, 35 renal-pancreatic, 32 lung, 17 hepatorenal, 2 pancreatic, 1 cardiorenal, 1 cardiopulmonary, and 1 intestinal, and 2,039 corneal transplants.

The report highlighted that among the patients who received a transplant, 328 were pediatric -under 18 years of age-, of which 207 received organs and 121 corneas.

The realization of these transplants was possible thanks to the completion of 1,721 donation processes: 767 donation processes with a diagnosis of brain death and 954 with cardiorespiratory arrest, carried out throughout the national territory: Province of Buenos Aires (539), Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (147), Misiones (131), Santa Fe (111), Corrientes (110), Córdoba (108), Mendoza (97), Neuquén (69), Tucumán (66), Entre Ríos (65), Jujuy ( 49), Río Negro (47), Santiago del Estero (45), Catamarca (28), San Juan (23), Salta (17), Tierra del Fuego (15), La Rioja (13), San Luis (11) , La Pampa (8), Chaco (7), Formosa (7), Chubut (5), and Santa Cruz (3).
