If you’re looking for skiing conditions and winter weather, you have to hunt for altitude meters, is the message from meteorologist on duty at StormGeo, Lillian Bergheim.

On Wednesday, there will be mild weather and rain over large parts of the country.

– There is a fairly strong low pressure coming in from the north from Scotland, which will continue into the Norwegian Sea. Precipitation that comes in connection with this low pressure is expected to occur already this evening, says Bergheim.

While last week there was snow chaos over large parts of Eastern Norway, winter has more or less disappeared with the rain.

Much rain

Western Norway will be hit by rain as early as the night of Wednesday; later in the morning it changes to rain showers.

– There will be quite a lot of precipitation in the south of Western Norway tonight and tomorrow morning. Over the course of the day, the precipitation will come as showers.

Nor are the inhabitants of Southern Norway and Eastern Norway protected from the rain.

– They will at least get rain tonight and the first part of tomorrow. Over the course of the day, however, there will be some lightening, says Bergheim.

The low pressure that brings this rainfall will also bring some wind tomorrow.

In the southern parts of the mountain areas, i.e. from the Hardangerviddene and southwards, strong gales to small storms are expected tonight and tomorrow morning, according to the meteorologist.

The same wind conditions will take place along the coast, in the areas from the Sognefjord and southwards. In the Oslo Fjord you will be able to experience stiff to strong gales.

– If, by chance, people should still have some outdoor furniture standing outside, it is probably time to pack it up, says Bergheim with a laugh.

Moving north

According to the meteorologist, the precipitation will move northwards throughout the day.

In Trøndelag and Nordland, the day will therefore start with lingering weather, before there is some precipitation and sleet early in the day, before it clears up again.

In Troms and Finnmark, the temperature will cause the precipitation to come as snow inland, but as rain along the coast.

Poor ski skills

The new year does not offer quantities of “white gold” and soft powdery weather in this country. At least not south of Trøndelag.

– Mild weather and relatively high temperatures in recent days have resulted in poor skiing conditions; in Eastern Norway, you must at least exceed 500 meters if you are to find good skiers. While the snow line in Western Norway will be at 600-900 metres.
