Brasilia, Brazil.- The Brazilian Police detained this Sunday a man with an explosive device and a knife who was trying to enter the esplanade of Brasilia for the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

According to the authorities’ statement, the suspect came from Rio de Janeiro to participate in the event and during the search fireworks and a “fishbowl” type knife were found.

Authorities said the man was detained and referred.

In recent weeks, violence has increased in the capital by supporters of the far-right Jair Bolsonaro.

Last week, a man was arrested for making a bomb that was discovered in a truck loaded with aviation fuel at the entrance to the Brasilia airport, and confessed that he was seeking to sow chaos to provoke a military intervention.

The authorities have deployed 10,000 police officers and troops to reinforce security at the celebrations this Sunday and check the participants, who cannot bring bottles, cans, flag poles or toy guns. The carrying of firearms by civilians was also temporarily prohibited.
