Mexico City.- The three minors who were bitten by a bat and who have symptoms of rabies are in serious condition, the Ministry of Health reported yesterday.

The two eight- and two-year-old girls and a seven-year-old boy, who are siblings, were attacked by the animals in the municipality of San Andrés Texmelucan, which is located about 100 kilometers from the Oaxacan capital.

The laboratory has not yet determined whether it is rabies, said Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell yesterday.

“But they are being treated as if it were rabies, they are being given prophylactic treatment, this means using the vaccine and a product called immunoglobulin, which is an antibody that neutralizes the rabies virus in case they have it,” he explained. .

He explained that the rabies virus is transmitted mainly between wild animals such as bats, especially those that feed on blood, but also coyotes, badgers and raccoons.

He added that Palo de Lima, in the municipality of San Andrés Texmelucan, more than four and a half hours from the capital of Oaxaca, is a community with very high marginalization conditions and that the closest health center is two and a half hours from the town.

The official ruled out the merit of activating a health alert for these cases.

He highlighted that Mexico managed to certify the elimination of human rabies transmitted by dogs.

He pointed out that there is a case of rabies in Nayarit, it is a 29-year-old woman bitten by a semi-domestic cat in a rural community.
