They demand more funds for the education of immigrant children

Gathered in Lower Manhattan, in front of the historic Tweed Courthouse, a group of immigrant families and activists asked the city government to include funds in the next city budget so that immigrant minors, including the children of the families Asylum seekers have access to public schools.

The protesters highlighted that it is necessary to guarantee investments in programs and services that help these families improve.

“My experience at school has been with the topic of communication. My five year old son has autism and it has been a real challenge trying to communicate with his teachers. We are asking the city to help us so that teachers can have materials in our language so we can communicate in a better way,” said Sandy Mite, one of the protesters.

Specifically, they ask that the city budget for fiscal year 2025 include $25 million in the Promise NYC program for child care for immigrant families, four million dollars for the public schools’ communication and outreach campaign, aimed at speaking parents other languages.

And 800 thousand dollars to increase the number of secondary schools prepared to support recently arrived immigrant youth.
