The tight control that Putin has established during 24 years in power makes his re-election in the March presidential elections almost assured.
Prominent critics who might challenge him are in prison or living abroad, and most independent media are banned.
The Russian Communist Party, the second largest party in the lower house of Parliament, the State Duma, nominated veteran legislator Nikolai Kharitonov. The communists and other factions in the Duma represent only a symbolic opposition and generally support Putin, who ran as an independent.
Siege of democracy
Over the weekend, Russia’s Central Election Commission refused to accept Duntsova’s nomination from a group of supporters, citing errors in paperwork, including spelling.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court rejected Duntsova’s appeal against the commission’s decision.
After losing the appeal, Duntsova said she would start working on creating her own political party and will stand for “peace, freedom and democracy.”
Duntsova has asked the leaders of the liberal political party Yabloko to nominate her as a candidate, but its founder, Grigory Yavlinsky, has rejected the idea.
