The head of the Buenos Aires Government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, published a harsh statement on Thursday in which he accused the national government of “contempt for democracy” for promoting the impeachment of the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice.

“The national government’s attempt to move forward with a political trial of all the members of the Supreme Court goes beyond all limits. They want to annul a state power, disregarding democracy and violating the National Constitution,” said the mayor.

The mayor maintained that it is a “violation of the Constitution to try to remove judges for the content of their sentences” and illustrated: “Just as in a soccer match we cannot remove the referee from the field if he charges us a penalty, In a Republic, judges cannot be removed either because we don’t like their rulings”.

And he continued: “In addition, it is to ignore the mission of Justice itself, which is to interpret and enforce the National Constitution and the laws, with the Supreme Court having the last word. Therefore, even if the Government does not like it, it must comply”.

“But the most serious thing – he pointed out – is that the independence of the Judiciary is the basis of the Rule of Law. It is what guarantees the freedom and property of any citizen.” “With a Justice subject to political power, as this government claims, all Argentines are left helpless,” she warned.

Rodríguez Larreta assured that the political trial “promoted by the President of the Nation” constitutes “another attack on the Judiciary” and guaranteed that it will not prosper in Congress. He warned, however, for the negative effects it will have on the economy.

“Who invests in a country in which a president wants to annul the Judiciary? What confidence in legal certainty can be generated if the highest president openly violates what the highest court says?” he stated.

He affirmed, on the other hand, that the process against the ministers of the Court -Horacio Rosatti, Carlos Rosenkrantz, Juan Carlos Maqueda and Ricardo Lorenzetti- is far from being one of the main concerns of society.

“I have been touring the country for months and there is not a single Argentine who has told me that their priority is to change the judges of the Court. What they want is for England to go down, get a job, live without fear. They want to change this government that does not listen to them, that does not look at them, that does not understand them and that does not take care of their needs,” he said.

The mayor reiterated that they will stop the impeachment of the magistrates in Congress and in an electoral key, he closed: “We are closer to change every day. In each Argentine I see the strength to build together a different country, that respects the Constitution and that deal with the real problems, the ones that affect us all every day. The future is respecting the law”.
