Race against time: the obstacles facing the search for the missing submersible

BOSTON – The United States Coast Guard announced Thursday that they found several wreckage within the area where they were searching for the submersible that disappeared in the North Atlantic Ocean during an expedition to the Titanic.

In a message posted on its social networks, the USCG reported that experts are evaluating the information collected by the remote exploration vehicle (ROV) known as Horizon Arctic and that there will be a press conference at 3 p.m. Eastern Time

At the moment, it has not been confirmed that the remains are from the Titan submersible, in which there were five people on board.

The finding comes about five hours after it was estimated that the reserve of oxygen for people inside the Titan submersible was exhausted.

The sub had a four-day supply of oxygen when it set sail around 6 a.m. Sunday, said David Concannon, a consultant with OceanGate Expeditions, which oversaw the mission. Owen explained that an approximate 96-hour oxygen supply is a useful “target” for researchers, but it’s only based on a “nominal amount of consumption that the average human might consume doing certain things.”

The total area of the search zone is twice the size of Connecticut and is 2.5 miles deep, said Capt. Jamie Frederick of the Coast Guard’s 1st District. “This is 100% a search and rescue mission,” Frederick said. “When you’re in the middle of a search and rescue case, you always have hope.”

On Wednesday, the Coast Guard had said it would bring more boats, craft and underwater robots to the area after detecting underwater sounds, including banging noises, that momentarily revived hope.

But even those who expressed a bit of optimism warned that many hurdles still lay ahead: From finding the submersible’s location, to reaching it with a rescue team and bringing it to the surface, assuming it’s undamaged, and all that before the oxygen supply for the passengers runs out.

The North Atlantic area where the Titan submersible disappeared Sunday is prone to fog and storms, making it an extremely difficult environment in which to conduct a search-and-rescue mission, said Donald Murphy, an oceanographer who worked as chief scientist of the Coast Guard’s International Ice Patrol.

On board was the pilot Stockton RushCEO of the expedition organizing company, OceanGate.

While his background is in aerospace and technology, Rush founded OceanGate Inc. in 2009 to offer underwater expeditions to researchers and explorers, according to the company’s website.

The Washington-based company began taking tourists to the Titanic in 2021 as part of its effort to record the slowly deteriorating ruins.

There is also the British businessman Hamish Harding, who lives in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. He is a billionaire adventurer who holds three Guinness World Records, including the longest time spent by a manned ship at the bottom of the sea.

In a Facebook post Saturday, Harding said he was “proud” to be participating in the mission as, due to the weather, another one this year was unlikely.

Shahzada Dawood and her son Suleman they are members of one of Pakistan’s most prominent families. The family business, Karachi-based Dawood Hercules Corp., is involved in agriculture, petrochemicals and telecommunication infrastructure.

Nargeolet is director of underwater research for E/M Group and RMS Titanic Inc., has completed 37 missions to the Titanic’s wreckage and overseen the recovery of 5,000 artifacts, according to his profile on the company’s website.
