They suspend gas in buildings due to lack of inspection

Con Edison plans to suspend gas service to more than 1,000 buildings in the Bronx and Manhattan.

According to the company, this is because they have not been able to carry out safety inspections at these locations.

The service suspensions began on May 8.

Con Edison said its workers were denied access to about 1,100 buildings in the two counties mentioned.

The company must carry out inspections of gas meters in residential buildings, as a safety measure.

“Our point is that they are safe and for them to be safe, we need them to let us in to do gas inspections, the gas meters, and that helps us ensure that everyone who lives in the building or in the area is safe,” says Ana Reynal, director of social media marketing at Con Edison.

Con Edison issued a statement saying in part that canceling service is its last resort, although necessary, to protect public safety and comply with state requirements. They added that building managers and their owners can still avoid suspension if they allow inspectors access.

The energy company serves approximately 10 million homes in New York.
