Restrictive measures

The Council of the European Union (EU) renewed sanctions on Venezuela, limiting them to six months in a new resolution.

The Council reported days ago that it “exceptionally decided to extend its restrictive measures for only six months instead of a year, until May 14, 2024.”

The MEPs ask Borrell if “intends to bring to the Council a formal request that these sanctions be extended for the usual duration of their extension, that is, for 1 year, given the evident lack of will on the part of the regime to take real and effective steps in favor of the restoration of democracy in the country.”

The EU sanctions against Venezuela were imposed in 2017 due to the “deterioration of democracy, the rule of law and human rights.”

The EU sanctions against Venezuela include an embargo on weapons and repression equipment, as well as a visa ban for 54 citizens, as well as the freezing of any assets they may have in Europe.
