Mexico City.- The various legal changes in labor matters have raised the cost of operating companies, which could affect salary adjustments and benefits for workers, warned Tania Estrada, an expert from the Lockton consultancy.

The analyst anticipated that a higher tax burden for employers will be reflected in lower benefits.

“An example is that if there is a certain amount for a salary increase, but adjustments must be made to the vacation premium, then the percentage contemplated for the increase in financial compensation will be lowered.

“In general, there is a tendency, if not to cut, then to slow down the growth of benefits and benefits,” he commented.

Estrada added that companies are trying to rethink their policies based on the legislative changes related to teleworking, the increase in vacations, the adjustment to the vacation bonus and profits.

“Those who have the greatest impact from these changes are small and medium-sized companies. The issue of vacations is already being suffered by some companies with the increase in the number of days because the vacation premium increased; it is not only having to replace the employee, it becomes a workload because the premium is also increased.

“And we have the issue of NOM 37 (teleworking) that is about to enter into force and what we have seen is that (companies) have been preparing to face the norm,” he explained.

He said that organizations must manage to cover shifts or make more contracts.

Also determine what happens with accidents at home and within working hours in the case of teleworking.

He recalled that, prior to the pandemic, the teleworking model was applied to between 5 and 10 percent of companies and there are currently more than 13 million people who work in a hybrid scheme.

“With the norm in force, the conditions for working at home will have to be made more formal, such as providing an ergonomic chair for workers. That impacts costs,” he considered.

To deal with these changes, the expert recommended that companies comply with an emotional salary (flexible hours, or reduced working hours) and not only attend to the economic part.
