Lenovo is finally getting serious at CES 2023 and, with the ThinkPhone, has presented its first smartphone with the Think branding, which is world-famous thanks to the ThinkPad notebooks. One wants to offer a kind of BlackBerry successor, so it is aimed at business customers.

As Lenovo announced today, the so-called Lenovo ThinkPhone will be launched shortly. The base of the mobile phone, which has an aramid fiber back, naturally comes from Motorola. The device is basically a current high-end smartphone, which will offer, among other things, a 6.6-inch OLED display with Full HD resolution and a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hertz.

Top hardware, but nothing for private customers

Under the hood is not the very latest technology, because the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is still installed, i.e. the “penultimate” top SoC from the US chip supplier that was released in autumn 2022. Nevertheless, the Lenovo ThinkPhone with the up to 3.2 gigahertz fast 5G-capable chip should provide more than enough performance in all situations.

The Qualcomm chip is said to be accompanied by up to 12 gigabytes of RAM and a maximum of 512 gigabytes of fast UFS storage, although expandability will probably not be possible here. When it comes to cameras, Lenovo uses a 50-megapixel camera with optical image stabilizer for the ThinkPhone, a 13-megapixel sensor for ultra-wide-angle shots and the usual pointless additional 2-MP sensor for depth effects or the like. The front camera should at least be able to offer a resolution of 32 megapixels.

Thanks to a 5000mAh battery, the ThinkPhone will be able to accompany the user through the working day without any problems, especially since the power storage can be refilled within a very short time with up to 68 watts via USB-C cable. Optionally, you can also use Qi wireless charging with up to 15 watts. The smartphone is also IP68 certified, making it waterproof and dustproof.

Where ‘Think’ is written on it, ‘Think’ should also be inside

Above all, Lenovo wants to adapt the ThinkPhone visually so that it fits in well with the line-up of business-oriented PCs and other products from the manufacturer. The operating system running on the device is Android 13, i.e. the latest version of Google’s operating system. Since corporate customers depend on long-term support, Lenovo wants to deliver new operating system versions for the ThinkPhone for at least three years and security updates for four years.

Motorola and Lenovo primarily want to appeal to larger corporate customers with the device and therefore offer extensive protection, security and management functions. This not only means that companies can centrally manage their employees’ devices, but also an integrated security processor that works as a kind of “second level of security” and is intended to keep the data on the device safe.

In addition, with Think2Think, Lenovo and Motorola are creating an interface between the Android operating system on the smartphone and Windows on ThinkPads and ThinkStations, which allows apps to be streamed from the phone, shared clipboard and file storage, and the use of the smartphone as an extended webcam . As so often, Microsoft is on board and implements a team connection via the so-called “red key” button built into the ThinkPhone, with which you can use the smartphone via “Push-To-Talk” and a kind of walkie-talkie app can communicate directly with Teams users. It is also possible to stream Windows desktops to the ThinkPhone as well as to use the Microsoft 365, Outlook and Teams apps preinstalled on the phone.

Lenovo did not provide any price information for the ThinkPhone, but instead asked interested customers to contact the manufacturer’s business customer service representatives to receive package offers. Free availability of the Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola, as it is officially called, is apparently not planned.
